Mids in away day victory

A GRITTY South of Scotland League performance down at New Abbey on Saturday saw the Mids gain their first victory under recently appointed management duo Craig Simpson and Paul McDermott as they defeated Abbey Vale 1-0.

The first half was fairly uneventful, with both sides failing to produce any meaningful chances. And it was no surprise when the teams turned round 0-0 at the break.

A couple of changes made by the Lockerbie side at the start of the second half seemed to give them a platform to get forward in numbers. It was then no surprise when on 53 minutes they took the lead after Jordan Harley was brought down in the box and Luke Hammond expertly netted from the resultant spot kick.

This goal gave the Mids a confidence boost and for the majority of the second half they were well on top, despite Abbey Vale making several chances for themselves.

A second goal, which would have eased the Lockerbie side’s nerves, just wouldn’t come.

And, despite Hammond hitting the bar twice and Denver Milligan cracking one of the upright, the Mids had to settle for a single goal victory.

The team spirit that is evidently growing was there for all to see at the final whistle with delight in abundance from the players, coaching staff and small band of supporters as the Mids recorded an excellent result against a side who started the match 16 points ahead of them in the League table.

Mids’ man of the match deservedly went to Cameron Dean, despite some good performances from four or five others in the squad.

Next week sees the team back at Lockerbie for a League encounter with Creetown.

And with the last match between the pair ending 5-5, it could be well worth a visit to New King Edward Park, kick off is at 2 pm.
