A buzz erupted around the Tesco store in the town’s Scotts Street when a poster went up next to its National Lottery booth, identifying it as having sold a £1 million ticket.
But a spokeswoman for Camelot said: “We’re doing a rebranding, as a part of that we’re sending out posters to all the lucky shops again. It could have been any time over the last 21 years that this ticket would have won.”
She added: “It’s either someone that’s taken full publicity or somebody that’s given permission to have a poster in the store a reasonable time after the win.
“So it could have been recently, or it could have been any time over the last 21 years.”
The Tesco store opened in December 2009, and there has been no £1 million winner publicly identified, leading to speculation about the lucky ticket holder.
One regular shopper at the store said: “It’s exciting to think that someone has won that prize and isn’t saying.
“You never know — your next door neighbour could be a secret millionaire. Then again, it might just have been someone passing through the area, or maybe they’ve just disappeared off to the sunshine.”
