AN APE spotted in the grounds of the Crichton in Dumfries has left people scratching their heads.

Visitors to the grounds have been going bananas since the discovery of what appears to be a chimpanzee inside a large knot in a tree at the Glencaple Road entrance to the site.

One person who spotted the chimp said: “I’m in and out of there every day of the week, and this is the first time I’ve seen it.

“It doesn’t move though, so although it looks very lifelike it obviously can’t be real.”

One suggestion put forward is that the chimp is either a stuffed toy or a model inserted into the tree by groundskeepers as a prank, with a suggestion it might have been placed there as long ago as October.
