A BEREAVED mum has been helped to find her baby boy’s grave — 62 years after he was born stillborn.
Dorothy Smith, now 94, gave birth to Christopher in 1962 but never got to meet or hold him and he was buried without her input.
She was living in Dumfries and Galloway at the time but is now in Derby. However, her thoughts always remained with her little boy.
Now, thanks to the efforts of “amazing” volunteers at Dumfries and Galloway Sands, she has finally tracked down where he was buried in St Michael’s Cemetery in Dumfries.
And Dorothy and her family came to the town recently to visit the grave and see a plaque that has been erected remembering him.
A spokesperson for Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, said: “Dorothy lived in the Dumfries and Galloway area in 1962, so Hilary, Dorothy’s daughter, contacted Dumfries and Galloway Sands to ask if they could help locate Christopher’s grave and find someone to make a plaque.
“Volunteers at the group quickly got to work and managed to find Christopher’s grave, with some help from Layden’s, a local memorial company. They also helped to source a plaque too.
“Last month, Dorothy, along with three of her children and their spouses, made the trip up to Dumfries and Galloway, all the way from Derby, to visit Christopher’s grave and plaque.”
