Mum's shock at nursing sign

ACTION has been taken after mums in the region expressed shock at a designated breastfeeding area in Dumfries Train Station.

A photo of a toilet with a ‘nursing room’ sign was circulated on social media with many mothers expressing disappointment at the facilities, calling them “unhygienic”.

Kayleigh Duncan, who snapped the picture, was shocked when she discovered the space.

She said: “I’m not sure that Dumfries Train Station expect everyone to feed their babies in the ‘nursing room’ as surely they know that it is legal to breastfeed in any public place in Scotland.

“However, I feel, by having it it makes mothers feel as if they should be feeding in there or that they would prefer it if they did.

“I think it is also very offputting for mothers who are considering breastfeeding or are new to breastfeeding as it does make out like feeding should not be seen.”

She added: “Mothers should be made to feel comfortable and not shamed as they are just trying to do the best for their baby.”

But a spokesman for ScotRail has clarified that the sign is very outdated and refers to an area for changing nappies.

He said: “Nursing mothers are welcome to breastfeed anywhere on our trains and stations.

“This particular sign is being removed, as it dates from a time when it meant baby changing facilities and does not conform to any modern expectations for a nursing area.”

Meanwhile, the Mum2mum breastfeeding support group and Bump, Baby and Beyond in Dumfries are working to improve awareness of breastfeeding across the region.

Member Rebecca Topping said: “We are currently working in partnership with NHS Dumfries and Galloway to launch a ‘Breastfeeding Welcome’ scheme for local businesses and premises who will ensure their staff are supportive of breastfeeding mums and that they provide appropriate facilities.

“A friendly smile or comment can boost someone’s confidence and really make a positive difference to their breastfeeding journey.”
