A NEW baby friendly guardian has been appointed for NHS Dumfries and Galloway.

Director of public health Valerie White has also taken on the new UNICEF role.

She said: “I am excited to take on the role of Baby Friendly Guardian for NHS D&G. Breastfeeding is an important public health issue. I have had personal experience of the the breastfeeding support offered by the midwifery, health visiting and infant feeding services and I understand first hand the value of this work.”

She is pictured left with Eithne Clarke and Jenny Devlin from the Infant Feeding Team, during Scottish Breastfeeding Week earlier this month.

The trio are also supporting the launch of the ICON initiative across Scotland, which aims to help parents cope with crying babies. The aim in Dumfries and Galloway is that bitesize training will be provided for relevant staff groups to enable them to have conversations with parents about coping with crying infants.
