NEWTON Stewart secured their sixth win on the spin in the Cree Lodge Cup first round tie away to Abbey Vale last Saturday.
Vale got off to the perfect start seven minutes in when a flowing break down the left flank was eventually fired across the area, evading almost everyone except Josh McVinnie at the back post who had the easiest of tasks to side foot the ball over the line.
The visitors were stunned by this early setback, but they soon settled into the contest when four minutes later a quick throw and a precise through ball found Aaron Drysdale. And he left the home ‘keeper with no chance to square the match.
Ten minutes from the break the visitors continued to push forward. Jack Marshall picked up a ball wide left and cut inside before curling a tantalising ball into the area which was met by Marc Whyte who glanced a header home to put the Creesiders in front.
The teams emerged after the interval looking to assert themselves and it was certainly one of those games where the next goal was vital. Both pushed for the breakthrough without ever really testing either keeper, however, with just over ten minutes to go, an Abbey Vale attack found their striker baring down on goal but his point blank effort was superbly saved by Euan Drysdale.
The Newton captain proceeded to send a long ball into the Vale half where Robbie Murray sent a ball into the direction of Robert Middleton. The striker composed himself before calmly lobbing Vale shotstopper Taylor Hall.
