Nithbank fire was ‘wilful’

FIRE crews were back at the former Nithbank hospital last week.

Three fire engines were called in to tackle a blaze in the main Nithbank building on Lindsay Terrace at 6.25 pm on Thursday night.

This latest fire is the third time in two years that the former hospital has been set alight and police believe that the blaze was started deliberately.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 6.25 pm on Thursday, 3 April, 2025, we were called to a report of a fire at the derelict Nithbank Hospital, Dumfries.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, and there were no reported injuries.

“The fire is being treated as wilful and enquiries are ongoing.”
