No speed cameras for Springholm

A DUMFRIESSHIRE village on the A75 does not qualify for speed cameras, despite numerous accidents in its vicinity .

The village of Springholm has seen more than its fair share of tragedy with dozens of accidents occurring on the A75 route which goes through the village.

Recently Castle Douglas and Crocketford Councillor Pauline Drysdale raised the idea of average speed cameras in both Springholm and nearby Crocketford with Transport Scotland, but the government body responded with: “Across Scotland, safety camera are deployed through the Scottish Safety Camera Programme primarily where they have the greatest potential to reduce injury collisions and where there is evidence of both collisions and speeding.

“An annual site prioritisation process is undertaken each year to determine new safety cameras site across our road network. This national exercise acts to ensure the right camera technology is in the right place at the right time.

“There is one mobile enforcement location in Crocketford, in addition to 21 additional mobile enforcement locations along the full length of the A75. The most recent safety camera site prioritisation process did not identify Springholm as a location which meets the minimum site selection requirements.”

However, the reply also noted: “In December 2024, the First Minister committed to reviewing whether average speed cameras would be an appropriate technology change and that review is currently underway as part of the 2024/25 site exercise.”
