A STONE commemorating the friendship between Dumfries and Norway will be placed beside a bridge in Dumfries later this year.
The stone is being gifted by the Scottish Norwegian Connection (SNC) to recognise the long-standing friendship between the nordic country and the town, as the Norway Brigade was formed in Dumfries during World War II, in addition to over 200 marriages taking place between Doonhamers and Norwegians.
Scottish representative of the SNC Beverly Thom is delighted that the historic connection is once again being recognised, she said: “The friendship stone is the Norwegian way of marking the importance of Dumfries in their hearts, ‘you took us into your lives without question, you made us welcome and we appreciate what you did for us’.
“A delegation of around 40 SNC members will be travelling from Norway to visit Dumfries from September 14 to 19 with events open to the public and will be of particular interest to many people within the region.”
The stone will be displayed beside Devorgilla Bridge and officially presented to the town on in a ceremony on the Whitesands on Saturday September 16.
