Only Fools star enjoys border lunch
STAR STRUCK. . . Sir David Jason OBE with Gretna Chase Hotel Head Gardner John Hampson

THERE was excitement in a Gretna hotel this week when a famous face stopped off for lunch.

Actor David Jason OBE dined at the Gretna Chase Hotel on Tuesday.

The 83-year-old celebrity, renowned for his role as Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, was lunching with a friend.

Head gardener John Hampson, right, immediately recognised the actor, approaching him soon after to get an autograph and a selfie.

He said: “I was gobsmacked when I saw him, I couldn’t believe my eyes.

“I’ve been a fan of Only Fools and Horses for a long time, and have seen every episode and still watch it to this day.

“I went to do a bit of gardening and then went back in to see if he had finished his lunch. He had so I asked if he could have his autograph for my mam Helen Hampson, as she’s a big fan also.

“David said it was no problem and wrote for Helen, ‘Good Luck’, and signed his name before asking me to look after my mam.

“David Jason is a lovely man and the nicest fella.”

David Jason has been working with Jay Blades for a new series on BBC Two called “Touring Toolshed”

The programme will see David reveal his passion for mending broken items alongside his furniture restorer friend.

The pair will take their toolshed to the UK’s air shows, steam rallies, county fairs and vintage festivals, to meet talented crafters, makers and tinkerers – as well as people who could use a little help.
