Park fire branded ‘arson attack’
DAMAGE . . . this tunnel at an Annan play park was destroyed by a fire last weekend

Videos were shared online of the blaze on Saturday night which saw a piece of play equipment at the site completely destroyed.

It follows a spate of of anti-social behaviour and vandalism incidents recorded in the years since the £500k facility opened.

Previous incidents include paint being thrown on nearly every piece of equipment and broken glass deliberately put on slides.

Even after young people have previously been identified by police and social services, issues persist.

Annan Play Park Steering Group (APPS) chairman Cllr Sean Marshall issued a statement on behalf of the trustees.

He said: “The trustees are devastated, but also angry about the latest and most damaging attack at the weekend.

“It is becoming evident that this was a deliberate arson attack on Saturday evening and CCTV footage of the incident and other information has been passed on to Police Scotland.”

He added: “In the past, from the small amount of funds at the trustees’ disposal we have replaced broken and vandalised equipment on an ongoing basis.

“But the cost of the damage by the arson attack at the weekend to play park equipment and the pump track is way beyond funding held by the group.”

The fire brigade were called at 9.30 pm. They attended with one appliance, extinguished the flames and made sure the area was safe before leaving the scene.

Police also attended.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “At around 9.50 pm on Saturday, March, 15, we were made aware of a fire at a play park on Standalane, Annan.

“The fire was extinguished by the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and is being treated as wilful. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 3774 of March 15, 2025. Alternatively, reports can be made anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Since the events of Saturday night, one of the original trustees, Wendy Hamilton, has set up a Go Funding Page.

APPS has been overwhelmed by the response from the public as well as other donations and support from individuals and organisations from not only Annan, but across the region.
