Park pond problems continue

ISSUES relating to Moffat’s Station Park have reared their head again, to the annoyance of residents.

The park’s putting green and shop were noticeably closed during the school holidays despite appeals from the community.

Meanwhile, the boating pond continues to be plagued with issues despite numerous investigations by council workers.

The matter was discussed at Tuesday night’s meeting of Moffat and District Community Council (MDCC), where a statement from the council’s community asset team was read aloud. It stated: “Despite our continued best efforts and hard work, the boating pond is unfortunately failing to hold water and therefore will be unavailable over the Easter weekend.

“The boating pond has given us considerable problems over several years and despite a great deal of work by the community assets team to rectify this, it still remains unusable.

“This water drop is further compounded by a considerably reduced water supply entering the site and despite exploratory investigations the pipework around the pond is clear of obstruction.

“We will give a further update in due course whilst working on finding a solution or finding options going forward.

“Community Assets apologise that is much loved feature is not available over the Easter weekend and our teams are just as disappointed as undoubtedly the community and visitors will be.”

The play area was also up for discussion at the meeting as it has fallen into disrepair, but MDCC chair Liam O’Neill assured the community that a solution is forthcoming.

He added: “I now have confirmation that an internal bid for funding has been put into the council’s budget for £90,000 and has been approved and will be put towards new play equipment and surface area which has also been deteriorating.

“So that is pretty good news and it is going out to tender at the moment. I know it sounds like an awful lot of money but it is in line with the modern-day cost of this equipment. So hopefully that will all come together fairly quickly.”
