Parking crackdown is happening

A TOTAL of 247 tickets for illegal parking have been issued in Dumfries town centre so far this year.

Since January police have been responding to public concerns around illegal driver behaviour.

And in an update this week they revealed 12 reports have also been submitted to the Procurator Fiscal for driving in the pedestrian zone.

Councillor Ian Blake is chair of the council’s police, fire and rescue sub committee.

He has been aware of problems locally and this week raised the issue with police commander, Chief Superintendent Stevie Meikle,

Mr Blake said: “The police confirmed that where appropriate and other duties permitting, they will enforce parking offences.

“Hopefully with publicity and with increased police attention, this will make a difference.

“The decriminalisation of parking should be with us early next year, but in the meantime watch where you park as a fixed penalty tickets is probably not what you want.”
