Patient thanks opticians for saving her sight

AN optician in Castle Douglas helped save a patient from losing their eyesight.

Fiona Strain, 62, visited Purcell Opticians in December after noticing a change in her vision. She was initially advised by the GP that it was most likely a migraine, but her sight continued to deteriorate and after four days had progressed from obscured vision to almost completely opaque vision in her right eye.

Following an in-depth appointment, optometrist Mitchell Fairley made an urgent referral to Mountainhall Treatment Centre in Dumfries where Fiona was seen within an hour and diagnosed with a detached retina.

She then underwent surgery at Gartnavel Eye Hospital in Glasgow within just 24 hours of her initial visit to the opticians.

Director and optometrist at Purcell Opticians, Mitchell Fairley said: “Fiona’s symptoms were like many common complaints we hear of from our patients – a noticeable change or disturbance in the vision in one or both eyes.

“In many cases, these symptoms are explained by changes in the anatomy of the eye which are part of the normal ageing process, as opposed to something sinister. However, in some cases such as Fiona’s, there is a sight threatening problem which requires urgent attention from the hospital eye service.

“Fortunately in this case we were able to triage Fiona and see her for an appointment on the day she phoned, diagnose the issue, and organise an emergency appointment for her at ophthalmology.”

Mitchell added: “Had Fiona waited another few days before seeking advice, her referral and sight saving treatment might not have been as effective.

“These situations don’t arise often, and most cases are something more trivial, but the moral of the story is: for any sudden or unusual changes in your sight – don’t put it off! Contact your local optometrist for advice as soon as you experience the symptoms, as they will be best placed to advise and manage your concerns.”

Meanwhile, Fiona thanked Mitchell for being “very thorough”, noting: “My eyesight has been completely restored and I would like to take this opportunity to thank Purcells for their professional service, especially Mitchell.”
