WHEN Annan man Paul Harrington found out about the planned art centrepiece project, and saw the drawings of the ‘Spirit of the Annan, he was inclined to help raise some money towards the £100,000 goal.

The 59-year-old, who works all over the country installing garden rooms, is in the midst of training for the Canalathon Ultra event at the end of next month.

He uses the River Annan as his training ground with frequent runs up to Brydekirk and Hoddom

Having already signed up for the gruelling race between Sowerby Bridge and Manchester on March 30, Stockport native Paul has now decided to also do a fundraiser.

He said: “From Sowerby Bridge, Yorkshire, you run to Manchester along the Rochdale Canal. You turn around and then run back again!

“I’ve done the race before, and I had already booked it for this year. I was talking to someone about this (the sculpture) and said – I’m doing the race, so I might as well do it for a cause.
“I’m not a road runner, but I like the ultras because they’re different and not a lot of people do them.

“I’m hoping to do it in about 12 hours, weather permitting.”

Paul has already created his own piece for the sculpture at one of the forging workshops and he is very excited to see the project once it is complete.

He added: “I think it’s incredible, it’s just getting the money together to do it. That’s why it’s 100km for £100k!”
