Paul’s Canalathon raises funds
FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE . . . a large group cheered Paul to the finish line

The proposed landmark is a community-led public art project that will create a lasting new sculpture marking Annan’s resilience and identity.

Stockport native Paul took on the mammoth challenge of running the full length of the Rochdale Canal from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester, and back, clocking up 100km in a single day.

The run was not without its challenges. Paul battled oncoming wind and strong sunshine; conditions that any runner knows can be tough, especially when it comes to staying hydrated.

By mile 46, he was struggling. Fortunately, spectators Val and Peter Russell from Annan The History Town group were waiting at a checkpoint just as Paul passed by.

They were able to supply him with some flat Lucozade and a cheeky lemonade shandy – just the ticket to lift his spirits and give him the final push he needed.

Paul said it was the thought of all his sponsors and the importance of the community project that got him over the finish line.

Not only did he complete the gruelling 100km race, but he finished in 6th place! A fantastic achievement, especially as several other runners did not make it to the end.

He crossed the finish line with a huge smile, cheered on by his family and supporters who had come down from Annan to watch him cross the finish line.

The Canalathon fundraiser aimed to raise £1000 for SoTA, which will incorporate metal salvaged from the town’s two lost footbridges – washed away in the floods of 2021 – into a striking centrepiece sculpture.

The project is being led by history town development officer Gail McPhillips and has so far involved local schools, community groups, and residents through forging workshops and storytelling events.

Paul’s fundraiser has helped to raise funds and raise awareness of the project and its importance to the town. His Canalathon stands as a symbol of endurance, spirit, and community pride – perfectly echoing the themes behind the sculpture itself.

Donations and sponsorship are still being collected, with totals to be announced in the coming days.
