Pool hit by rising energy costs

SWIMMERS in Kirkcudbright are disappointed that their local pool has to reduced its opening hours to cope with winter bills.

The Kirkcudbright Swimming Pool announced its decision via Facebook last week to open at 9 am instead of 7 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, saying: “Opening at 7 am on a Tuesday and Thursday is just not proving cost effective for us and we have to be really careful financially as the winter heating bills loom.

“We are also short on teachers for lessons in the afternoon, so if we don’t have staff opening as early it would mean they are available to teach. We are having to pay an extra person to come in and open in the morning. We are really sorry but it just doesn’t make sense financially for us.”

The change of open hours has lead to the cancellation of the Tuesday morning Hydrohex class.

It remains to be seen how rising costs are going to effect other swimming pools in Dumfries and Galloway including DGOne. A spokesperson from Dumfries and Galloway Council said: “Energy audits are currently being carried out across all our council estate to establish where we can make further efficiencies.”
