Popular butcher hangs up his apron

A POPULAR Dumfries butcher who has served thousands of customers has announced he’s hanging up his apron for good after nearly five decades.

J.B Houston owner Stuart Houston revealed the shock news that his last day at the Greenbrae Loaning butchers will be this Saturday.

Stuart has been the owner of the site for 40 years and it has been in his family for 75 years.

The 62-year-old – who has become an online hit with his festive videos over the years alongside his wife Mary and daughters Sally and Amy – says it was a “difficult decision” to retire but the time is right.

Stuart also revealed that the Carlisle family – who run Border Meats in Lockerbie – will take over the business next Wednesday. He said: “I have had the joy of carrying the baton for my father, John Houston, and Pap, Kiddy Houston, for 48 years and have truly loved my work.

“But having no one to pass it onto in the family, I am pleased to announce the shop will be taken over by another local family business.

“I’d like to thank all my customers, or should I say friends, from the bottom of my heart for your continued support and loyalty over the years.

“A massive thank you to my hard working staff, some of whom have worked for me for over 30 years, they will remain working for J.B Houston’s and continue to serve you all.

“The biggest thank you goes to my wife and family who have supported me through the best and worst of times. I have been proud to work alongside my family and it has been my honour to carry on the legacy.

“I look back at my time in J.B Houston’s and think of all the memories created, from running about in a wetsuit chasing wild haggis with Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall to becoming ‘The Scottish Haggis Champion’ in 2017.

“It’s hard for me to believe there will be no more crazy Christmas or busy haggis seasons.

“We would like to wish the Carlisle family all the very best with our wee shop. We hope it serves you well.”

But before riding into the sunset, Stuart has promised his hardcore fans that a retirement video will soon be available.
