Post and waste workers latest to strike

DOZENS of postal workers in the region will strike today as part of national action against pay, while waste services locally will be affected by strikes next month.

Across the UK, 115,000 members of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) – which represents Royal Mail Group workers – will walk out today.

Further postal industry strikes will follow on August 31 and September 8 and 9.

Meanwhile, Unite confirmed eight days of waste strike action by its members, from September 6-13, in 19 areas of Scotland, including Dumfries and Galloway.

Industrial officer Wendy Dunsmore said: “Unite will now deepen and spread our strike action across two thirds of the country.

“It’s time for the politicians to realise the gravity of this dispute and take responsibility before this situation dramatically escalates.”

And CWU general secretary Dave Ward added: “There can be no doubt that postal workers are completely united in their determination to secure the dignified, proper pay rise they deserve.”
