The girls travelled to Ayr to play Cambusdoon in the final league game of the season. With the teams sitting in first and second place in the league, Queens only needed a draw to clinch a historic league and league cup double.
Cambusdoon showed their attacking strengths in the first ten minutes, causing Queens problems at the back with only the woodwork saving them from an early deficit.
Queens settled after this initial scare and enjoyed most of the possession thereafter. The breakthrough came when a Stephanie Grant corner from the right was fired into the six yard box where it was met by Rosie Ferguson who hammered past the helpless Cambusdoon keeper.
In the second half Queens dominated, and they sealed the title when some trickery by Eve Crombie created space for her to put in a long cross for Lacey Caven to volley in at the back post.
It has been an extremely successful season, with a first ever league and league Cup double for a Queen of the South Ladies and Girls team.
Thanks go to all of the girls’ parents and supporters throughout the season and the team’s sponsors Genesis Occupational Health and Safety, Morse Global and William Paul Engineering.
Ladies lose out on goal difference
QUEENS Ladies took on Kilwinning at Palmerston on Sunday knowing that they would need to run up a large score to take the league title.
In an entertaining and hard fought game, Queens were leading 6-0 when a long delay for an injury to a Kilwinning player, requiring an ambulance to attend, meant that the match was finished early with ten minutes to go.
Harmony Row, the other team in contention, beat Dalbeattie Ladies 27-0 and so with Queens requiring to score a further 17 goals the curtailment of the game did not affect the destination of the title.
Scorers for Queens were Maisie Copland, Alexandra Connon, Leona Smith, Charlotte Bryden, Holly Ovens and Megan Masterton.
Queens completed the season with 18 wins, one draw and one defeat. The new season, which will run from January to June to facilitate a change to an August to May season thereafter rather than the current calendar year seasons, will see Queens having an opportunity to win promotion from the regional league set up.
The final game of this year is on Sunday, when Queens travel to Bonnyrigg Rose for a second round Scottish Cup tie.
