Scott Mercer today signed for the Doonhamer’s side from East Fife for an undisclosed fee.
The 21-year-old defender, who stands at just under six foot tall, has joined the side for 18 months — as manager Gary Naismith looks to reshape the squad in and build in depth for future games.
Naismith said: “Scott played every minute of every game for me at East Fife the season we won the league two title, and he has been a regular for East Fife this season.
“He’s what I’d describe as a modern day full back who has pace and is full of energy.
“Predominantly a right back he can also play of the left which is exactly what I’m looking for to provide us with additional cover in these areas as we only really have Jamie Hamill on the right and Jordan Marshall on the left at the moment.
“He’s someone who has been on our radar for a wee while, but we moved and spoke to East Fife on Sunday after Jamie picked up a booking at St Mirren, meaning he’ll be suspended”.
Naismith believes Mercer to have potential to become a top quality player, but stressed that it will be a tough job getting a regular place as a Championship full back.
Currently a personal trainer, Mercer is delighted to be making a return back to full time football, and will be hoping to challenge regular Hamill for a starting spot in the Queen’s side.
Mercer will go straight into the Queen of the South squad for Saturday’s away game against Dundee.
