Locals spotted the rodents this week and were quick to contact Dumfries and Galloway Council to organise pest control.
A spokeswoman for the council said: “The mild winter has allowed the rat population to continue increasing across the country, which is a problem not unique to Moffat.
“Whenever we receive reports of a problem we take action to eradicate any infestations by treating the area as quickly as possible. I’m sure that such speedy action will be welcomed.
Councillor Stephen Thompson said: “I’m glad the council are taking quick and appropriate action since this rat problem was reported.
“A pest control program has been started to eradicate the infestation, however, officers have advised it is likely to take a week or two to complete the work.”
