Reckless drivers risk road workers’ safety

NINETY incidents of drivers encroaching on roadworks were recorded in the last year in South West Scotland.

There were dozens of reports of vehicles breaching safety barriers, ignoring red lights and violating temporary speed restrictions.

And the problem has sparked a new road safety campaign promoting the risks faced by road workers. Amey’s Scottish southwest trunk roads unit is highlighting the growing threat of ‘driver incursions into roadworks’ after 90 such situations were recorded between January 2024 and February 2025.

They want to send a powerful message – that road workers are real people with families and their safety is at risk every day.

Brian Park, from Amey, said: “Our road workers risk their lives daily to maintain and improve Scotland’s roads, but reckless incursions are making their job even more dangerous. This campaign is a wake-up call, every incursion could lead to a life-changing or fatal accident. We urge all drivers to respect road safety measures, follow signage, and drive responsibly. A moment of impatience is not worth a life.”

He noted that drivers who ignore safety rules face fines of up to £2500, as well as penalty points or disqualification.
