A NEW service has launched helping people to recycle their unwanted trainers.

And it’s available in Dumfries and Galloway.

The JogOn campaign works to repurpose unwanted trainers and prevent them from going into landfill.

They have now teamed up with EVRi to launch a home collection service, costing £3 to send a box of trainers weighing up to 15kg – which could hold as many as 30 pairs.

Founder Tony Piedade says it’s now easier than ever to donate to their “worthy and sustainable cause”.

He pointed out that an estimated 33 million pairs of running shoes end up in landfill each year.

However, 70,000 pairs have been collected and saved from landfill since the start of the JogOn campaign in 2021. Of these, 60,000 pairs were re-used and sent to charity partners, NGOs or micro-economies across the UK and overseas, and given to people who need them most. Those that are end of life, which is only 8-10 per cent to date, are disposed of sustainably in the UK via a waste-to-energy plant where electricity is generated from incinerating waste.
