Region crowned best for Burns young talent

DUMFRIES and Galloway was named the best team at a national youth Burns competition last week.

The region was crowned overall champions at the event in Gourock after local secondary pupils smashed it in a range of singing, recitation, piping and instrumental categories.

The National Schools Burns Competition is run by the Robert Burns World Federation and attended by groups from across Scotland.

The youngsters representing Dumfries and Galloway had qualified after winning silver and gold medals at the regional Burns competition held in Dumfries in February.

And they shone again, picking up a haul of cups, medals and trophies for their talents.

D&GBA schools competition convener Fiona Evans is delighted at the results and said: “We are extremely proud of all our young people who took part in the competition. They put in a sterling effort and their performances were all impressive.

“Every competitor’s scores are counted, so they all contributed towards us winning the team prizes and the overall best team prize.

“They all supported each other and showed an excellent attitude.

“We are now looking forward to the national primary competition on June 1.”
