DRIVERS in Dumfries and Galloway recorded the most careless driving offences in Scotland in the last three years.
Data from the DVLA shows that there were 6.66 total offences per 1000 drivers in Dumfries and Galloway between 2020-22.
Careless driving is when your driving falls below the minimum standard expected of a competent and careful driver. This includes driving without reasonable consideration for other road users.
Penalties range from fines and points on licences while more serious cases can go to court and lead to disqualification.
Although drivers registered in Greater London collected the most careless driving offences in the last three years, the researchers at Big Motoring World say that when they factor in the number of local licence holders per county, the areas with the highest offence rates are actually all located in the Scottish countryside, with Dumfries and Galloway on top.
Commenting, CEO Peter Waddell said: “It is certainly interesting to find out how different areas compare, yet we need to keep in mind that accidents can happen to any driver who gets behind the wheel.
“Even those who do not have a careless driving offence on their record need to remain vigilant, and that includes keeping up with their car maintenance to help them avoid any mistakes which could impact other road users.”
