Region on alert for 'heavy snow'

SNOW is creeping up the country and forecasted to hit Dumfries and Galloway on Thursday.

And the Met Office are warning of heavy snow for the region, particularly on Friday.

Forecasters say the wintry weather will have the potential to cause ‘significant disruption’.

They expect it to start snowing locally on Thursday and last until 6 pm on Friday night, although other forecasters say it could continue over the weekend.

There are predictions of at least 5-10 centimetres of snow in most places, with up with 40 cm in the Southern Uplands parts of the area.

In addition, strong winds are expected, which may lead to blizzard conditions and drifting.

The public is being told to expect delays and cancellations on transport systems, blocked roads, power cuts and there is even ‘a small chance’ that more rural communities could be cut off for several days
