A BEACH in the region has been given an excellent rating for its bathing water, with four also declared ‘good’.
Coming out in front, according to the SEPA results, is Mossyard at Gatehouse of Fleet, above.
And gaining goods are Brighouse Bay near Kirkcudbright, Rockliffe, Sandyhills and Southerness, while Dhoon Bay has been marked as ‘sufficient’.
Scotland’s bathing water season began on June 1 and SEPA officials have welcomed the improvements locally and nationally, which follow millions of pounds invested in wastewater infrastructure, improved agricultural practices and targeted pollution control.
Principal scientist for bathing waters Ruth Stidson said: “Scotland’s bathing waters are a vital part of our natural environment – important for health, wellbeing, tourism and community pride. We’re seeing more sites rated excellent than ever before.
“This improvement is a real testament to partnerships with local authorities and stakeholders, including communities, to protect our water environment, and targeted investment by Scottish Water, farmers and land managers to reduce pollution.”
Water quality at all 89 designated bathing waters is routinely analysed during the season, which runs until September 15.
If any results show unexpectedly high bacterial levels, precautionary advice against bathing is issued while SEPA investigates.
This advice is available daily on SEPA’s website.
