Reserves get shot at silverware

STRANRAER Reserves will have a chance to net a trophy in February after beating Wigtown 3-0 last Saturday in the semi final of the Tweedie Cup.

The Young Blues scored three good goals courtesy of Adam Wilde, Leon Paton and Jay Gallacher, with only some excellent defending by the Wigtown defence and saves by the Wigtown keeper preventing the score from being more.

Wigtown did have a couple of chances of their own, but, again, good defending by the Stranraer back line resulted in another clean sheet for the Reserves.

They will face Lochar Thistle in the final.

Elsewhere, for the second week in a row Newton Stewart welcomed Lochmaben to Blairmount Park.

And for the second week they ran out convincing winners, this time posting a 5-1 scoreline.

Robbie Murray’s placed strike into the far corner put the home side ahead.

A few minutes later Jack Marshall cut inside two challenges and smashed an unstoppable effort into the top corner.

The second half was only two minutes old when a poor clearance from the Lochmaben goalkeeper was picked up by Aaron Drysdale.

The midfielder surged forward unopposed before rifling a superb strike past the helpless goalie to put the home side three to the good. Lochmaben came back into the match when a lofted free kick was half cleared before a fine strike gave the visitors the goal their battling performance so fully deserved.

In the final stages a swinging corner kick caused havoc and the ball ended up in the net via a Lochmaben player.

Drysdale headed home a fifth in added time to ensure a vital win for the home side.

Creetown’s scheduled clash with Nithsdale was postponed.

  •  THE final has been scheduled for Friday February 21, with a 7 pm kick off at Blairmount Park, Newton Stewart.
