DUMFRIES has its centrepiece fountain back and the final touches are being made before it can be officially unveiled.
The town centre landmark was taken away in November for refurbishment and repairs.
And its been safely returned now, albeit with a different look.
The expertly restored fountain is a dark bronze with gilded ornaments, a change from its old red and gold but more in keeping with how it would have been originally.
Explaining the colour choices, a fountain spokesperson said on social media: “While no photos exist from the original unveiling in 1882, the Dumfries and Galloway Heritage Service archives at the Ewart Library revealed a superbly detailed description of the fountain dated 4th December 1882. It’s this evidence that influenced the project team’s decision when choosing the final coatings.
“Up close, you can see the main bronze colour is dusted with gold which shimmers beautifully in the daylight, and the bold background makes the gilded Putti, dolphins and storks really stand out.
“The team are delighted with the result, and its authentic and respectful acknowledgement of the work of the original engineers and colourists.”
And they added: “There’s a few more elements to reveal before the hoardings are taken down and the fountain is switched back on.”
