Retiring butcher hangs up his apron
FOND FAREWELL . . . proprietor David Scott, left, thanks butcher Brian Waugh for all his service

AN ANNAN butcher will hang up his cleaver today after working for almost half a century.

Brian Waugh has been employed at R. Johnstone and Sons in the High Street for 49 years, but is preparing for a well earned retirement.

Although Brian isn’t one for celebrations and won’t be having a retirement party for his final day, fellow butcher and proprietor David Scott made sure to give him a parting gift.

Brian said: “I have been working in this shop ever since 1974, although I wasn’t a butcher back then.

“I was just out of school when I became a message boy at the shop. I’d stay in the back and wash all of the dishes, and go out to deliver orders around the town.

“I became a full butcher since then, and have seen my fair share of people come and go since I started working.”

In his time working at the shop, Brian has come into contact with many different people, including celebrities such as English footballer Jack Charlton, comedian Gregor Fisher, and actor James Cosmo.

After almost half a century of dedication, Brian said that he was happy to slow down and finally retire from working.
