Road closure sparks village anger

A GROUP of residents in Kirkpatrick Fleming are infuriated about the planned closure of a rural road later this month.

Network Rail is closing the B7076 at Newton to Irvington, from 2.30 am on May 27 for two days in order for maintenance to be carried out at the Cove level crossing.

However, the community are claiming that they were given ‘little to no notice’ about the closure as only one A4 poster was put up in the village.

An alternative route along a single track road will be put in place during the works but residents and business owners are concerned that the closure will create high levels of disruption during the bank holiday weekend.

Owner of Bruce’s Cave caravan and camping park Jan Ritchie yesterday said: “It’s ridiculous, that is our busiest weekend, we will welcome up to 25 motor homes, caravans and tents due that weekend.

“There are 15 residences and three businesses that will be completely cut off. To close that road and divert traffic to a single track road where there are no passing places is outrageous.

“The last time that road was closed it caused nothing but disruption and this will be no different.”

Network Rail were contacted for comment.
