Roof issues found at Langholm Primary

WET rot and water damage have been discovered in the roof at Langholm Primary.

Checks were carried out at the school during the summer break and a variety of problems identified, including rotting and saturated timbers and panelling.

It was flagged up as a potential concern due to being the same age as Beattock Primary, which had to close in April when serious safety issues were found in the roof there. Pictured above.

A report will go before members of the council’s education committee next week and they will be asked to agree that repairs can take place at Langholm next summer.

It says: “The works required at Langholm Primary School consists of removing existing zinc roof covering to flat roof areas and remove all defective timber above the felt roof covering and change the build up to create a warm roof construction and reapply the zinc roof coverings, including any alteration to lead abutment flashings.

“Replace the water damaged roof panel over the storeroom and high dependency changing area. Remove gutters and replace defective plywood fascia behind zinc and reinstate existing gutters, zinc fascia, improve eaves, and verge details to prevent the ingress of water.”

The pricetag for fixing Beattock is £1.6 million – but it’s not yet known if Langholm will cost the same.
