Rural Oscars hosted by area's MSP

FINLAY Carson MSP had the privilege of hosting the annual Scottish Countryside Alliance awards, more commonly known as the “Rural Oscars”.

Last week’s event at the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh once again attracted the good and the great of “local” Scottish businesses.

Speaking on the night, Jake Swindells, director of the Countryside Alliance Scotland, said: “Running a business in a rural community isn’t easy, particularly in recent times.

“The evening was all about celebrating the valued role these rural enterprises have in their communities.

“The Countryside Alliance is proud to be honouring a group of people so clearly passionate about the goods and services they provide throughout our incredible countryside.”

Meanwhile, the Galloway and West Dumfries MSP praised the high standard of competition and spoke of his delight that businesses in his own constituency featured prominently on the shortlist.

Mr Carson said: “It is particularly pleasing that so many firms that I have personally visited over the years have made it through to the finals.

“The award-winning Five Kingdoms Brewery has been named in the local food and drink category that commends those who champion local produce and help enhance their local economy.

“Both the Ship Inn in Drummore and the Selkirk Arms in Kirkcudbright were shortlisted in the pub category. Although they missed out, the award celebrates pubs that are motivated by a sense of community and maintain that classic pub feel.

“Similarly, The Sports Shop in Stranraer was named in the Rural Enterprise category that celebrates the imagination and ingenuity of individuals in the countryside supporting the rural economy.

“Making it to this stage is an incredible achievement and I am sure The Sports Shop will take great heart in doing so well in being recognised.”
