School rolls in focus

EDUCATION bosses are moving forward with plans to extend the catchment area of a Dumfriesshire high school.

The Wallace Hall Academy catchment area may be expanded for the Thornhill secondary to also accept pupils from the Burnhead area onto the school roll.
Dumfries and Galloway Council’s education committee this week agreed to begin a six-week consultation on the move in August this year.
Meanwhile, a Kirkcudbrightshire primary school could permanently close early next year.
Carsphairn Primary was mothballed by education chiefs, having had no pupils on the roll since August 2019.
Dumfries and Galloway Council started a consultation on its closure in March 2020 – but then the pandemic unfolded and halted any progress.
Councillors sitting on the education committee this week agreed for the consultation process to resume after the school term in the summer.
