Scotland calls on Lexie

A YOUNG Gretna Green rugby player has earned her first Scotland cap.

Lexie Steel was part of the under 18 Scotland Futures team who faced Ireland in a training fixture last weekend. Scottish Futures is a player development programme with a focus on rugby skills, game understanding and behaviours needed to succeed in high-performance rugby.

Lexie was selected for the programme after impressing coaches at a two-day training selection event last August. And the Annan Academy pupil hopes it will help her to pursue her dream rugby career. She said: “I found out I’d been selected in early September and we’re been training together regularly ever since. “I’m hoping to make it into the Scotland under 20 squad but we’ll just have to wait and see.”

As well as her Scotland commitments, Lexie also plays for her home team, Annan Warriors. Wishing her well ahead of her Scotland debut, the Annan Warriors posted a message on social media which reads: “We couldn’t be prouder of Lexie and what she has achieved and will continue to do so in the future. The hard work at training and commitment to travelling she has put in is paying off. Lexie has been a regular part of our Hornets since the beginning of her rugby journey and made her Warriors’ debut against Wigtownshire earlier this year.

“We look forward to seeing her continue to develop over the years.”
