Screel Hill run

MORE than 50 runners from across the country took part in the annual 6.4 km Screel Hill Race which saw competitors race to the top of the 1150ft hill near Auchencairn and back down.

The winner was Andrew Cox (Moorfoot RC) who finished the race in 33.56min; with Craig Freshwater (HBT) second, 21 seconds behind; and Colin Donnelly (Cambuslang) third in 34.30 min. Taking fourth place was Bruce McLeary (Cairnsmore Milemunches) who was the first Dumfries and Galloway runner. It was a good run for Mark Whitelaw (ADAC) who was fifth overall, with local athlete Ally Wight (Hardrock Hoodlums) finishing in seventh in a time of 36.39. Jonathan Dale was the first of the Dumfries Running Club runners taking tenth place in 37.18, with two other local runners John McRobert (Hardrock Hoodlums) and Andy Webster (Solway) in 12th and 13th places respectively. Rally ace Jock Armstrong gave up his four wheels for the day to compete and finished in 18th place in 40.05.

WINNING RUN . . . Andrew Cox who won the race heads uphill with Bruce McLeary, the highest placed Dumfries and Galloway runner behind him.
