Search for doctor continues

THE search for Dr George Porteous continues.

Dr Porteous left work at Lockerbie Medical Practice at about 6 pm on Tuesday evening and has not been seen since.

And concern is growing for Dr Porteous after his car was found parked near Beeswing – but with no trace of him.

Speaking today, a police spokeman said: “Today our searches have focused in the area of Beeswing and Loch Arthur and we have deployed our helicopter, dogs, search teams and called upon the services of Moffat Mountain Rescue and Nith Inshore lifeboat. So far we have had no trace of George.”

It’s believed his car was parked in Beeswing between 7 pm on Tuesday night and 7.30 am on Wednesday morning.

The police spokesman added: “We want the public to think back to Tuesday night, did you see anyone in Beeswing matching his description?”

George is described as being 5ft 10” tall, of medium build, with brown/blonde hair, glasses, blue eyes and he was last seen wearing a light blue shirt and tie, dark trousers and black shoes with a black waterproof jacket.

The 51-year-old, who lives in Islesteps, is a popular figure in the Dumfries and Lockerbie communities and his disappearance is out of character.

Meanwhile Dumfries and Galloway Health Board have stepped in to help his Lockerbie Medical Practice.

Support in the form of temporary medical cover continues to be provided today at the practice allowing urgent appointments with patients to take place.

Deputy medical director and GP Grecy Bell said: “Updates will be issued around arrangements as we move into next week.

“We would like to thank all patients in Lockerbie and surrounding areas for the patience and understanding they have demonstrated at this time.”

Any patients seeking urgent support can arrange to be seen at the practice by calling the Lockerbie surgery number.

Those with non-urgent requirements are asked to be patient, with updates on arrangements set to follow in coming days.

It is likely that a reduced form of service will be necessary in the interim to manage the current circumstances.

Anyone with any information that could assist with identifying the GP’s whereabouts is asked to contact police on the 101 number and quote incident number 3660.
