DEEP disappointment has been expressed after councillors this week rubber-stamped a decision not to issue a long lease on a piece of land at Lockerbie.
The RH Youth Organisation (RHYO) team are gutted that the Economy and Infrastructure Committee did not back their plans for a ten-year lease for the transfer of land at the former caravan site in Glasgow Road.
They had wanted to take it on to develop a space for “community recreational activities”, including events, a nature path, adventure park, garden area and an orchard.
Instead the elected members unanimously followed the recommendations of Lockerbie and Lochmaben Common Good Sub Committee who also turned it down last month.
They had expressed concerns in the sustainability of the project and RHYO’s ability to fund it, as well as the loss of rental income to the common good fund and potential access issues to the land for townsfolk.
At Tuesday’s meeting, Annandale South Cllr Ian Carruthers said: “I know this area well, I grew up in and around this area.
“I agree entirely with what was said at the common good committee round about social return, the community use that is existing, and the impact it would have on local people in that area.
“I feel the recommendations coming from that committee are the correct ones.”
However, RHYO chairperson Lisa Hogg yesterday hit back at the decision and said: “We are deeply disappointed by the outcome of the committee meeting on Tuesday. Our young people have been let down by the very councillors entrusted with their future. However, this setback will not deter us. Our youth committee will regroup, rethink, and return stronger.
“To our incredible young people, parents, carers, local businesses, and wider community—your unwavering support fuels our determination. This organisation will not falter. We will continue to thrive, fight, and serve with passion, resilience, and the full strength of our board.
“Our mission remains clear: to champion our young people and build a brighter future for our community.”
The organisation still has a year to run on their lease of the site.
