CHANGES will be made next year to the length and structure of the secondary school day at Lockerbie and Moffat Academies.
Parents were this week notified of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s intention to bring the timetable of all the region’s high schools into line, with a new start time of 8.50 am and finish time of 3.20 pm. There will be a 15 minute morning break and lunch will last for 45 minutes and move to 1.05 pm.
In a letter, chief education officer Jim Brown said: “From June 2025, all secondary schools will adopt a standardised timetable structure. This will promote an increase in the range of subjects offered and an increase in equity of the offer in all schools.”
He explains it means that youngsters in S4 will get to study seven subjects for National 5s, while S5 and S6 students will be able to take five Highers.
Mr Brown added: “The transition to a single timetable for the curriculum and the school day will ensure that every young person in Dumfries and Galloway has access to daily check-ins, and where appropriate, the ability to select the most suitable study pathway from a range of courses, across schools.
“Officers will continue to collaborate with headteachers to prepare for the implementation of the new timetable.”
It comes after councillors in the area rejected a proposal for a 4.5 day school week.
