Seven deaths from drugs at start of year

SEVEN suspected drug deaths were recorded in Dumfries and Galloway in the first three months of the year.

Statistics were released this week for the period from January to March.

And they showed an improved situation on 2024, when there were 17 deaths from drugs in the region in the same three month period, as well as 45 in total throughout the year.

South Scotland MSP Colin Smyth is now calling for action to bolster support for drug rehabilitation and treatment.

Speaking after the figures were published, he said: “These tragic statistics show the human cost of over a decade of government failure to tackle Scotland’s drugs crisis.

“For the first three months of the year, Dumfries and Galloway has recorded seven drug deaths – and that is seven too many. We must not forget that these figures represent real people, with real families and friends who are mourning their loss.

“The fact is that there is no silver bullet to bring down drugs deaths – what we need is a joined up approach that includes properly supported rehabilitation and treatment services.

“It is time for the government to wake up to the tragedy continuing to unfold on its watch and act to save lives.”
