RACING pigs were the star attraction at this year’s Moffat Show.
They proved particularly popular with the crowds at the Raehills venue last Saturday, with all ages lining up to cheer on their favourite porkers.
It was just one of the highlights at a successful, and sunny, show day.
Livestock entries were high, the craft tent was busy and the industrial section was bursting with colourful creations.
The fine weather brought out the crowds to enjoy the stalls, children’s attractions, vintage vehicles, hospitality and entertainment.
There was also showjumping, a tractor pull and sheaf tossing.
But at the heart of it were the animals, with farmers coming from around the area to compete.
After a hectic morning of judging, the supreme winners of the sheep, cattle, horse and dog sections were called to the main ring for the overall show championship judging.
They went head to head in front of judge Scott McKinnon, who finally plumped for a Galloway cow from J&S Ross at Shawhead as his winner, with a three crop North Country Cheviot, from Lockerbie’s Robbie McCormack in reserve. Explaining his choice, Scott said: “The Galloway was very correct with not many faults – but it was close between the cow and the sheep.
“I thought the sheep was outstanding as well. There wasn’t much between them.”
And the Ross family were delighted to scoop another title after a busy summer, which included champion titles at the Great Yorkshire Show and Stewartry Show and reserve champion rosettes at the Highland Show and Dumfries.
Doug Ross said: “It’s a tremendous feeling, we did not expect it today.”
