The Star sculpture was originally approved in 2013 to be built close to the M4 at Gretna Green with an estimated height of up to 55 metres.
However, a change in disability access laws now mean the landmark will only be 80 per cent of its original size.
It is hoped that the Star will attract enough attention to draw in around 100,000 visitors every year and rack up £4 million for the local economy.
The late Alasdair Houston was chairman of the Gretna Landmark Trust and he described it as “a project of international importance that will be invaluable in promoting regeneration and recovery in the wake of the pandemic by shining a light on Dumfries and Galloway”.
