SOLWAY Spartans Boxing Club’s Aaron Mckinnel claimed a silver medal in Motherwell last weekend.
The team travelled up to Ravenscraig on Saturday to box in the semi finals of the Intermediate Championship.
Head coach Terry Bruton said: “In the 67kg weight category we had Aaron McKinnel representing Solway Spartans. We had four very good boxers in our group.
“We first drew Reece McAllister from Alloa Boxing Club. This bout was really good to watch as both boxers had similar styles.
“But it was Aaron who took control of the bout, and he was looking really sharp throughout and landing some good scoring shots.”
After three rounds Aaron was declared winner.
Terry added: “We were all delighted with his performance and getting into the final where he would meet Jamie McLaughlin from Kilsyth Boxing Club.
“We once again travelled up on the Sunday and made the weight. “Once we got refuelled it was time to prepare. We knew this bout was going to be tough as Jamie had won the Western District a few months ago.
“As soon as the bell went the Kilsyth boxer was on the front foot all the time for the three rounds and Aaron just couldn’t find his rhythm, like on Saturday, so we had to settle for silver.
“This was still a great achievement as we are boxing at a very good level now.”
Aaron’s record from 16 bouts is 11 wins and five losses.
Terry said: “Hopefully before the season is out we can add a few more wins to his record. It was a really good weekend of boxing from Aaron. He gained valuable ring time and is developing really well.”
