Six is the magic number for town’s award winning hotel

COULD Lockerbie’s Townhead Hotel be the most heavily awarded in the region?

Owner Stephen Montgomery believes so as he can boast six award accolades in just the past year. The proud owner has gained a three star VisitScotland award, a two Star AA award, a 2015 Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence, a Good Hotel Award Winner 2015, a Certificate of Commendation from Police Scotland for record keeping, staff training and best practice on customer safety and a Silver Award in the Best Bar None Scotland Awards in the past 12 months.

Stephen, who opened in March 2014 and now has a team of 14 staff, thinks his business goes the extra mile and that’s why they have been so heavily awarded.

He said: “I would think that the Townhead has gained the most awards in the region in the past year and it is all down to the sheer hard work and determination of both myself and my staff.

“Each month we have a staff meeting where different ideas are discussed and it is a joint effort.

“We also have regular discussions with both the kitchen staff and bar staff to see where we can make changes or improve on what we already do.

“I think that the recipe for success comes from having the drive and ambition to do well and also our policy on in-house training, coupled with the backing of a good team.”

When asked which award he is most proud of, Stephen struggled to pick a top accolade.

He said: “Each award means a lot in its own sense, as each of them is for a different aspect of the business, whether it be for our food, our bar or our accommodation.

“It is great though to see a hotel such as the Townhead gaining awards, as it has never had awards before.”

Keen to out Lockerbie on the map and to get even more awards under his belt in 2016, Stephen is currently focusing his efforts on creating superior accommodation within the hotel and adapting his menu to meet growing nutrition needs in the vegetarian and gluten free market.

He said: “It’s long hours with very little social life, but to see our customers happy and to see them return makes it all worthwhile.”
