Skipper Tam will be ‘huge miss’
ANNAN Athletic will be without their captain for the next two matches after he was shown a straight red card in the dying embers of Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Kelty Hearts

Annan’s misery was compounded in the 83rd minute of the contest as club captain Tommy Muir was shown a straight for a rash challenge.

And Galabank boss Wullie Gibson knows the 27-year-old, who has played in every match so far this term will be a big miss in the heart of the defence.

The manager said: “Tam Muir will be a huge miss. He’s been playing with an injury for a number of weeks to try help the team, so that tells you the type of guy he is.

“However, his suspension will allow him to rest and recover. And one person’s misfortune is someone else’s opportunity.”

Reflecting upon the recent run of form in the league, where the team have picked up one point from a possible 18, Gibson added: “We started the season well but have seen the standards we set slip in recent performances, both individually and collectively.

“Away games are always difficult. We find ourself on that wee run in the last five/six games not being good enough.

“I take responsibility for that, it’s myself that picks the team and the tactics.

“But I’ve got to demand and expect more from individuals in the team as well.”

Montrose make the trip to Galabank tomorrow. And Gibson hopes the fans will have reason to cheer come the final whistle.

He said: “We’re back at home on Saturday following two weeks on the road and the aim is to pick up three points and give the fans something to feel more positive about.

“It’s another tough game but one we are looking forward to. Montrose are a very good outfit, that’s shown over the past few seasons.”

The playing squad was also bolstered ahead of the Kelty clash with the addition of defender Rhys Breen.

Known to the manager after a loan-spell at Queens from Rangers in 2021, Gibson believes the defender will be a quality addition.

He added: “Rhys will add good experience, organisation and quality to the team. He came straight in without training with the boys. I felt he did well and believe he’ll get better and better with more game time and training with the squad under his belt.”

Offering an update on the injury front, Gibson added: “Along with Tam we’re still without Paul Smith and Scott Hooper but we have had good news on both.

“We’ll be giving Josh Todd and Aidan Smith every opportunity to be available Saturday but that’ll be a late decision.”
