Spitfire move up in the air?

QUESTIONS have been raised over the future of the Moffat Spitfire Project.

The £400,000 project was announced back in April, and will see a lifesize replica of a PT 462 Spitfire moved from the garden of long-time Moffat resident Dr Hamish MacLeod to a manicured installation within the grounds of Dowding House.

Now four months on, the committee are in the process of securing funding for the project and Dr MacLeod will be meeting with Dowding House residents and a representatives of the RAF Association on Friday to discuss the project further, with the plan that installation would be completed by autumn 2024.

However some Dowding House residents are unconvinced by the project, with one resident, who wished to remain nameless, sharing his views at a community meeting on Tuesday night. He said: “There has been a lot of publicity about the Spitfire moving up to Dowding House, but it’s not going to happen. All these people involved have jumped the gun, thinking that it would happen in a short space of time but the residents are the ones who will have the last say. We don’t want it.”

A spokesperson for the RAF Association added: “We are currently waiting to receive further proposals on the Spitfire project, which we will consider in due course. We will ensure our residents are involved in this process, as they are always our top priority.”
