Spitfire works take off

WORK to move a replica Spitfire to its new home in the grounds of Dowding House is now underway.

Contractors began preparing the site earlier this week at the former home of Air Chief Marshal Lord Dowding.

Once in situ, the life size replica of a PT 462 Spitfire, which currently sits in a garden in the town, will serve as a tribute to the air chief, who was born in Moffat and served as a commander during the Battle of Britain and played a crucial role in the UK’s defence and in bringing modern aircraft, like Spitfires, into service.

A spokesperson for the Moffat Spitfire Project said this week: “When it moves to Dowding House this summer it will be joined by a bronze bust of Lord Dowding, thought to be the first tribute of its kind north of the border and a permanent tribute to the man who played such a huge part in ensuring the RAF won the Battle of Britain, a victory that hastened the end of the war by protecting the UK from invasion. The D-Day Armada in June 1944 could not have been assembled off the south coast had the Nazis been successful in 1940.”
