Squirrel sightings call

PUBLIC sightings of squirrels soared last year and one group are hoping to get even more data in 2024.

Saving Scotland’s Red Squirrels say that 2023 public participation in their survey was the second highest since its inception.

A total of 1334 people took part, reporting just under 2000 red and grey squirrel sightings across the country, including in Dumfries and Galloway.

Commenting on the local results, programme manager Nicole Still said: “In the South of Scotland a mix of the two species remain, with volunteer groups working hard to lower grey densities in the region.”

She reminded people that sightings of both species can be reported year-round at scottishsquirrels.org.uk/squirrel-sightings.
